MATHS
3rd & 4th:  Mental Maths week 21

3rd Class Maths
Monday 1st March.  We are going to continue with our topic of weight for a few more days boys.  Today I would like you to do the word problems on page 123.  Read the sentences carefully and decide if it is addition or subtraction.  Then write your sum out carefully using kg and g as your heading.  Remember there are 1000 grams in a kilogram.  Keep your kg and g seperated.  Then please do page 130 Q1.

Answers- Monday:  Q4 2kg150g   Q5 7kg 404g   Q6 21kg 49g   Q7 20kg 376g
                   pg.130    Q1 (a) 11kg 511g   (b)8kg232g  (c) 10kg 588g  (d) 4kg 335g

Tuesday 2nd March.  Please do the attached sheet today.  The problems are based on smarties.  Read the blue box on the top carefully and remember one smartie weighs around one gram so it is an easy number to work with.  Write the answers in your copy.  For the last part of the page, try to find these items in your kitchen and check the label to see what they weigh.  If you can't find a certain item you can swap it for something else.

Wednesday 3rd March:  Do the next page I have attached.  Write the answers in your copy.  Use your multiplication facts to help you with the first five questions.  eg. (a) three buttons= 3x2=6.  Questions 6 and 7 are addition questions which you can try to calculate quickly in your head.  Q 8 is subtraction and in Q9  do the sum in the brackets first.  You should not need to write out the sums as tens and units for this page.

Answers Tuesday:  Q1 (a) 50 smarties in a tube (b) 100 (c)200 (d) 500 (e) 1000g or 1kg
                                   Q2 (a)100g (b)120g (c) 190g (d) 500 smarties

Thursday 4th March:  I have another page attached for you today boys. You have to find the weights of the five items and write them down.  Then make a graph showing the different weights.  Use a ruler to draw the lines.  You can round the weights to the nearest 100 g to make it easier to represent them on the graph.  For example, if the ketchup weighs 420 g you round it to 400 g.  Or it weighs 560 g, that would round to 600.

Answers Wednesday: Q1 (a) 6g (b)12g (c) 16g  Q2 (a) 8g (b) 20g (c) 28g  Q3 (a) 12g (b) 24g (c) 30g  Q4 42g Q5 42g  Q6 (a) 500g (b) 300g (c) 400g (d)800g  Q7 650g (b) 500g (c) 800g (d) 600g (e) 950g  Q8 (a) 200g (b)250g (c) 150g (d) 250g (e)150g  Q9 (a) 200g (b) 350g (c) 300g (d) 100g

Friday 5th March:  Please try the page below on addition and subtraction of kg and g.  I would like you to do Q 1 and Q 2.  If you have spare time you can also do the other questions on the page.  Have a lovely weekend boys.

Activity E
Ponds are small pools of water.  They form in dips in the ground that fill up with rainwater.  A ‘healthy’ pond is teeming with plant and animal life.  Ducks, herons and kingfishers are some of the birds found in larger ponds along with mammals such as voles and water shrews.  Frogs, toads and newts are some of the amphibians that can be found in ponds.  Creatures such as snails, water fleas, dragonflies and beetles all live in ponds.  Pond skaters walk across the surface of pond water.
Plants also grow in and around ponds.  Duckweed floats on the surface with its roots dangling in the water.
