History of the School
The present school building dates from 1956 when it replaced the building opposite the school gates, which is now used as a business premises.
The school caters primarily for Roman Catholic boys of the locality, from 2nd class to 6th class. Our new enrolments, by and large, are boys who have completed 1st class in the Convent school. Traditionally, the catchment area for the school has comprised the town of Belturbet and the area of the parish of Annagh bounded by Castlesaunderson, Gannon’s Cross. Bunn lake and Straheglin.
Children from a triangle of the parish of Drumlane ie. from Staghall to the Mitchell Bridge bounded by the rivers Woodford and Erne, have also tended to come to school in Belturbet.
The majority of pupils walk to school or are brought by car. Three buses serve this school.
Since its inception the school has fluctuated between having a permanent staff of two or three teachers except for a brief period in the early 1990’s when four permanent teachers were required as the enrolment peaked at 103 on 30 09 1992.
Originally a two-classroom structure, a third classroom was added in the 1960’s and when a fourth classroom was required due to rising enrollments a pre-fabricated classroom was erected in 1992. This prefab now serves as Learning Support classroom and library. A General Purposes room was added in 2013.
