Wellbeing
As we return to school and routine after a very unexpected pandemic, wellbeing and taking care of our mental health is so important for returning to some form of normality and dealing with what has happened and how we feel about what has happened.
The boys have been engaging in many activities, lessons and discussions in relation to keeping our minds healthy, talking about how we feel, our responses to how we feel and how to take care of our wellbeing.
SPHE and wellbeing activities, discussions and lessons should be taking a more central role in our daily lives now.

Using the outdoor environment:
We are very lucky to have an outdoor classroom here in our school. 5th and 6th class have been spending a lot of time in the outdoor environment and bringing their learning in SESE outdoors.
Below are photos from National Tree Day in October, where 5th and 6th class were investigating trees in the local environment. They also planted trees for the local community.

Yoga:
Yoga lessons for each class began again when we returned to school after the summer holidays. In yoga, the boys are developing their strength, balance and flexibility, while also developing their posture and practicing breathing tecnhiques. Yoga lessons will be put on hold when deemed necessary, following government guidelines and restrictions.

Our Wellness Wall and the Weaving Wellbeing Programme:

We have been using the Weaving Wellbeing Programme in SPHE to develop positive wellbeing and promote a positive mental health and outlook since 2018/ 2019. To date, it has been very successful in generating conversation, talking through strategies, recognising that all feelings (anger, excitement, happiness, saddness etc.) are normal and okay to feel but that it is how we cope with and respond to our feelings that's most important.
It has also helped to open up and extend the conversation around mental health and the importance of having soemone that you know you can talk to if you're worried, stressed or have a problem.
Each class begins with developing character strengths in 2nd class and as they progress through the school, they move on to developing and practising new skills for enhancing and maintaining a positive wellbeing.

It is so important to take care of our well-being. We are practicing talking about how we feel and how our body reacts to those feelings. We are engaging in wellbeing lessons in school to help develop our mindset and look after our wellbeing.
The 2nd class programme of Weaving Wellbeing focuses on character strenghts, encouraging the boys to think deeper about what strengths and attributes they have as an individual, how they can use them positively for their own benefit and for the benefit of their family, friends and others around them.
As an introduction, pupils worked in their pods to spin the character strengths wheel. They identified the character strenght and identified the person in their pod that shows or uses this character strength, praising them.
